Description.

Moving from the broad to the particular, the historic to the contemporary, SAW 1 - The City, Sydney conjures an urban narrative around the social, cultural and topographic patterns and forces shaping Sydney.

Trespassing joyfully across disciplines and genres, we will seek out the architecture and public art that materialises contemporary conditions and attitudes; projects that respond to the culture, history and environment of Sydney and not just imported formulaic codes. As we meander through the old city, the influence of Aboriginal occupation, landscape and colonial settlement will be discussed in relation the the city’s growth.

The tour concentrates on three contemporary iconic structures; Aurora Place by Renzo Piano, Governor Phillip & Macquarie Towers by Melbourne architects DCM and Australia's greenest office building, 1 Bligh Street by German architect Ingenhoven / Architectus.

SAW: The Sydney Architecture Walks

The city is our project.

On bike and on foot we explore ideas through architecture offering an interface between in-depth architectural knowledge and the wider design-conscious community.

Each route is driven by certain themes and threads and attempts to decode the city whilst proposing new ways of thinking about and seeing Sydney.

Our tours are aimed at you, the enthusiast. We don't assume you know anything about architecture, though we hope you are interested in the city's underside; in the ideas and patterns that generate.

We want you to get stung by architecture and begin to understand why buildings and cities are the way they are.

Get SAW feet. Sydney will never look the same again!
